Our goal with CycleYouth is to bring racers, coaches and sponsors together in a unified program in order to develop  the skills and abilities needed to succeed!

October:
Congratulations to Tristian Cowie of Brevard College for his win at Collegiate Nationals.  Tristan is a former CycleYouth rider. more

"I'd like to thank Andy and all the support from the team over the years, and I used tactics that I learned on CycleYouth to win the Collegiate national championships"

Seth finishes off the weekend with another National Championship title - this time in Super-D for 18 and under men.
On Saturday Ethan Quehl, KHS/Kenda won the Junior men's downhill by a mere one second. Ethan is a former Cycleyouth cross country racer turn downhiller full time.  Ethan's run was 5:23 beating all the factory teams.  Ethan benefited from training tips from both pro XC and Downhiller racers.  Chris Herndon, pro downhiller, who also coaches a summer camp for mtb'ers, gave Ethan insight on the best unknown lines, which made the difference at the top of the run.   This course was heavy on pedaling so all his cross country training and racing paid off big time!
Earlier on Saturday Andy rode away with the title winning on a muddy course.
Good and Fine rule the day on Friday as Seth leads from start to finish in this three lap race at Mount Snow VT.  It was a solid win and he even took it easy on most of the descents to ensure that he finished with no mechanicals. more

Short Track Race:  Seth takes the win!
Riding a tactical race Kemp sucks wheel until the last few corners to overtake yesterday's xc winner, Squire, to take victory in Seth's first National win.  A lead group of 6 broke from the field early and shrank to three then two as the 23 minute race progressed.
Meanwhile Wes, Jesus and Cory chased and moved up through the filed to finish in 5th, 7th place and 9th place.

Pictured above is Seth and Wes on podium in 1st and 5th.

Super-D
Another NY victory for CycleYouth!  "It'zs good!", says Seth after his fast descent down the mountain.  A LeMans start gave 3 riders a lead on Seth with Wes two riders further back.   Seth passed his first victim as soon as he mounted his bike, then passed the next on a suspicious drop and finally took the lead passing the leader on a steep slope.
Just a bike-length behind, Wes was riding side by side with his friend on the steep section.  Most of the XC riders got to the front on the top of the course, so the better descenders had to make their way through those riders.  Wes is a fast XC rider and also a fast descender so was able to get to the front early and pass others on the sketchy sections.  One little bobble caused him to take a bad line and loose positions, but a 4th place finish still put him on the podium.

NY Cross Country Race: Kemp 2nd, Martinez 4th, Lamberson 7th in Junior Expert!
A tight race in the top 5 saw Seth nearly miss a win and Jesus chasing close with Wes not far behind.
This is the week before the National Championships and all the contenders were there except Cory who sat out to rest up for the VT race.

CycleYouth Riders off to Camp
In the third edition of summer camp at Brevard College, the camp will see its largest team roster. This is a camp open to all USAC licensed riders ages 13-22.  CY will also find a lot of training opportunities in a fun, group setting to peak them for competition at the National Championships held in Vermont mid-July.

SERC Make-up race
Missing the Clemson, SC event while in Colorado, Andy made up for it by winning the make-up race.  By all calculations this GSC event is a SERC event in whole, not just a make-up event.
By mid-lap, Andy and Seth had a 1-2 lead on the competition which included pro racer Marion and teammates Cory and Wes.  Andy was either going to feel really good or really bad as he worked the junior MTB camp in Colorado the week before, sleeping not and coaching all week, arriving back home early that morning. (there is another camp in Brevard, NC June 29th).
Wes and Cory rolled in 7th and 8th a little stale both after a rest week.

Scorcher at Carter's Lake
by David Anderson

It was a hot one at Ridgeway/Carters Lake  and the devo team start wave was high noon.  Just to finish this race was an accomplishment in itself. Dustin Broadway had the highest finish in the Devo group with his third place finish at the 15-18 age group.  Dustin came around the finish to find that his Dad had a broken collarbone, which he got at the difficult short down hill at the start of the race.
In the 11 to 14 age group, Joe Buck took top spot for the Devo team with a 6th place finish.  The Devo members Joe, Carter, Trace and Dominique took the 6th thru 9 spots.

Racing

6-1
Bump n Grind, AL
Finally a race with no rain around.  This was a Cat III event and attracted racers from all over the local countryside.
Seth, Cory and Andy made the trip as others took the week off as this race was not on the agenda.  Big money was to be made though.  Andy could not race the money class because it was listed as a pro class and not a pro/ex or open class.  Andy did not renew his pro license this year as for every other race he woul dnot need it.  Andy raced the 30+ age group and won soundly, while Seth took the 19-29 win with Cory getting stuck behind a slower crowd in the tight singletrack.

5-25
SERC Heritage Park, GA
The Devo team gets their new kits today, mostly white jerseys, and as usual for this year it rains the day before.  The first wave saw the worst of the mud and we saw it all over their jerseys, but for the 2nd wave the course was in typical prime condition.
A near podium sweep in the Sr Expert race with Seth, Cory and Wes placing 1st, 2nd and 4th.  Actually the entier podium at this race all has the same coach (who plays no favorites), but only one of the medalist has a real job.
Andy had the win in the bag on the last lap, but blew it due to problems and took 2nd- still a good day.
  check back for Devo results

5-16
12 Hours of Tsali, NC
  The DOMINATION continues!
CycleYouth takes another win at Tsali beating out all challengers.
The 4-man team won this event last year with 3 juniors and one senior rider, and the plan remained the same for the 2008 race; go in and go faster than everyone else.  Two riders, Andy and Seth remained from the 07 team, and were joined by Cory and Wes this time around.
Everyone rode solid and lap times were among the fastest.  The challengers, which included a former CY rider and a couple of pros, put together what they thought would be the winning team, but came up short on every lap, fading to 9 minutes back at the half way point and eventually a lap down with 15 laps vs. CycleYouth's 16 laps. more

5-4
Ducktown, TN at the Ocoee White Water site was the driest round of the SERC series lately.  With typical rain just before the weekend making a pre-ride difficult, the race was nicely dry.
Seth, true to form, led the Sr Expert race from the start gaining his lead on the first lap and setting it in cruise control for the remaining 3 laps.  Wes rolled in 5th place while Cory 6th, both after peaking for the prior week's race in MD, so this race was difficult to stay fit for.
4-28
Fort Yargo was a combined SERC and GSC event so both Devo and CY teams could have all been at the same event.  That weekend was also a Worlds Qualifier for Juniors in Maryland.  Favorites for podium from CY suffered mechanical problems despite a up-front first lap.  Wes was the only survivor in the ultra-muddy conditions with a 12th place finish of the 25 starters.
Down in Georgia another wet weekend met the southern racers, but by mid-morning the course was in good shape.  Seth, the lone CY rider (was too young to race MD qualifier), took the Senior Ex win easily, while Andy played with the other top pros who could not separate the whole race; he took 2nd in a typical anti-climatic SERC "sprint".
The Devo team had a strong showing, results to come

4-12/13   Caraway Hills Omnium
A strong showing for the youth.  Seth (top Sr Ex) takes 2nd in Omnium and XC race besting out a host of pros viaing for the big payout.  Cory, Ethan and Wes all with a great day!

  4-6   Tsali, NC SERC #2.
CycleYouth cleans up.  In the Sr Expert CY takes 1st and 2nd with Seth winning and Cory close behind despite losing his pedal.  In the pro men Andy finishes 4th joined on the podium by former CY riders Mike 3rd, and Tristan 2nd.
Other riders suffered under the mud. Ethan mangled his chain with chainsuck, Wes flatted but finished along with Cody.

3-30 Racing in two states.  The DEVO team hits the GSC opener while the junior experts head to TN for an NRC race.
NRC opener in Tenn.  And the rain fell.  For the expert and Pro races though the trail was only tacky and the mud did not get into the little bike parts, which is good.
Riders Cory and Brad got their new bike just the day before, building the final touches out in the cold, windy open air.  Both dnf'ed due to unavoidable circumstances.
Wes missed the start by 15 seconds and chased over the flat road to no avail. The experts started with the pros which was not known until just seconds before the whistle blew.  At the front of the race Andy rode in easily for the pro win, while it took Seth nearly the whole race to move up and join him so they could ride across the line together - both finishing first in their respective class.  "I couldn't wait for Seth until he got in front of my competition", says Andy.

Meanwhile down in Macon the weather was much drier for the GSC opener.  The Devo team made their debut with 7 riders competing.  Justin Hinkle won the JR 11-14 class while Ethan, solely representing the older team, flatted out after riding in the lead group on the first lap.

3-16 The first SERC race took place in Gainesville, FL March, 16th.  Only a few CY made the long drive.  Dustin started the day off with the first race, while Seth, Ethan, Wes and Andy competed in the expert and pro races.
Seth 2nd, Ethan 7th, Wes 10th and Andy 5th in the pro.

In the downhill scene Ethan and Seth compete at gravity in SC placing 2nd and 3rd in the pro class only 6 and 7 seconds behind National Champ Chris Herndon!

Jesus is recovering from ankle injury.  Road racing is dangerous, Jesus took the risk and got a 4-week vacation from training.  He hopes to be on the trainer very soon, riding again and speeding recovery until the ankle is ready for the much safer sport of mountain biking.

CY and CYD
CycleYouth now has a program more carefully geared towards the needs of new and developing racers.  The CycleYouth Devo program is headed up by Alex Nutt (MTB Tandems) and Kari and Shey Lindner (semi-pro racer).  They are parents as well as racers and have a strong desire to help bring kids into the sport they love.  While Coach Johnston heads up the CycleYouth team, as General Manager, he is still very involved with both teams.  more
CycleYouth has become a more elite-level U-20 program.  The smaller size enables more targeted development for these highly motivated Junior Expert/Semi-pro National-Level athletes.

New Structure
Jan '08 -New Team in the works
Building on the success of the Junior team we will be expanding the program to form a team that serves Senior riders. This team will be unique to itself, but will benefit from shared sponsors and management.  The non-profit status of the U-20 team has to be kept separate, but is no reason to waste opportunity.
Thomson, Kenda, KHS, Rudy and others will be on board for the Senior team.  Perks include screamin deals on bikes and parts, comradely and good times.
The team is based out of GA and serves the entire southeast.  Mark Baldwin is heading up the membership.

Loss of a bicycle legend
Ronnie Thomson of Macon Georgia passed away leaving a legacy in the bicycle industry.  Well known for seatpost and stems the company he founded, LH Thomson, is also a tremendous supporter of the sport of cycling.  Thomson has been a supporter of CycleYouth from our inception and for that we are truly appreciative.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends.

Cyclocross in TN
Wes Lamberson, the new recruit, is taking a stand with the junior and cx4 category in Tenn. winning Saturday's junior race.

24 Hour of Moab
Andy recruited to race for The Hub in the final race of this 24 hour series held Oct 13 and 14th. The team place 7th over-all but had to race the "Just for Fun" class because they were fast and there was no class for a 4-man fast team.  7 other "fast" teams were demoted to this class.  Laird Knight now goes by many names.

KHS bikes:
  The bikes are truly amazing!
Both our ALite Team hardtails and XC904 Team full suspension bikes are masterful pieces of art.
The hardtail frames are sculpted for maximum rigidity and suppleness; at first it feels like a ti frame, but still has the stiffness of aluminum.  You will be checking your tire pressure at first thinking you have flatted.
The full sus bikes are based on the patented 4-bar linkage.  Little bob is produced in pedaling, and the smooth linear shock rate allow you to plow, seated, over most anything the trail throws upwards at you.  Riders owning both hardtails and full sus bikes soon find they never need the hardtail again.

Juniors
Cycleyouth will be attending qualifying events in order to compete for a spot on the National team, which competes at the World Championships - this year in Italy.
The Worlds are nothing more than a neat event to attend and a great way to race in another country.
The main goal for Cycleyouth is US based events and personal goal-reaching, for our mission is to produce quality Pro/Elite racers.

KENDA TIRES
A favorite tire of the team is the Small Block 8 by Kenda.  It's small knobs, semi-slick-like, roll fast with little weight, yet hook up excellent in most conditions.
The Karma is a great all-rounder.  Check out the new glass-bead SWS sidewall shield on our Karma's.  A nail gun can't penetrate the sidewall.
Even faster rolling is the Kozmik II Lite or the Short Tracker.  Advanced pedaling technique is needed to power up slick hills without slip, but riders of all abilities love this tire. www.kendausa.com
