The Organization:

CycleYouth / CycleYouth DEVO is a non-profit bicycle racing team dedicated to the development of young cyclists. CycleYouth is part of The Fulton Fliers, Inc. a premier off-road racing developmental program.

CycleYouth DEVO League is a program for introducing kids to bicycling and racing through local support such as shops, schools etc, while CycleYouth (CY) is a place for our more advanced athletes to grow.

The goal for DEVO is to encourage youth participation in racing by providing an organized team structure, teaching the skills and knowledge needed to pursue the sport effectively, and interaction with other kids with similar interests. DEVO is open to boys and girls of all ages.

The only qualifications to join the DEVO team is a serviceable mountain bike, appropriate helmet and shoes, and the willingness to put forth the effort needed to race mountain bikes.  DEVO riders are NOT required to ride the team sponsor’s brand of bike; new team members may ride their current bike.  We do ask that if DEVO team members purchase a new bike while on the team, that it be a through a participating bike shop or sponsor.

For 2009 the CycleYouth DEVO team will compete in the Georgia State Championship (GSC) Series, which consists of 8 races at various courses in middle and north Georgia. The GSC schedule runs from late March through August. If team members elect to do so, the team can also compete in other regional events.

Tumbling Creek 6 hour Race, Gainsville, Ga
10/25/09
This Sorba/Imba sponsored event included junior categories for the first time and cycleyouth devo brought out two teams. It was a fun day for racing with nice weather and a fast and sometime muddy course.
Our two man team include Elliott Baring and Hayden Lanzilotta and they captured fourth place.  Hats off to these two boys as they were just worn out by the end of the day with Elliott covering five laps and Hayden four. Elliott, while making use of his brand new bike, cycled the fastest lap of all the devo riders today during his second turn.
Our second team, running in the 3 man division, consisted of Evan Newman, Marco Newman and Carter Anderson.  While the boys had no other competition in their division (we did not tell them) they still turned in some great times. Special recoginiton for Little Marco for smoking 95% of all the adults in the opening Lemans running start.  Marco was in the top 10 in reaching his bike-very impressive runner.

12 Hours of Dauset (GA)

Dauset Trails, Jackson Ga. The Cycleyouth Devo team fielded three teams of highly energetic young men for the first ever Junior division race at 12 hours of Dauset.  Team Tele-tubbies for the Devo team of Janson Lindner, Everett Lindner and Joe Buck took home the big trophy by getting in one more lap than their competition.  While this team had a big lead through out the race, we had a major scare when Janson had to come back in about 10 minutes into his run during the night ride portion of the race with a dead battery .  Luckily we were able quickly get him a new battery within seconds and send him on his way.  Joe Buck stepped in with some great times and and commend him for a great effort as he was forced to ride more miles in a single day than he ever has ridden before.  Hats off to the Lindner brothers who graciously gave Joe the large 1st place trophy for his efforts.

The Devo Barney n Friends and Terminators teams showcased some of the great, new talent joining the Devo team. Our new members of Elliott Baring and Thomas Hightower joined up with devo veterans Haydon Lanzilotta and Carter Anderson  to form the Devo Barney n Friends team and finished in a close fourth position.  The Terminators team finished just behind and included Evan Newman, Marco Newman, Garron Terrell and Zach Collins. Watch out for this group of kids, as the Terminators were comprised with three 10 year boys and these boys were fast.  In fact, Garron Terrell a late joiner in the team, finished with the fastest time for all Barney n Friends and Terminators riders. It was great to see the boys running their lap times faster each lap they went out. The boys all had a great time and for the first time got a chance to ride and race in the dark.

Team names thanks to Andy who distinguished the 3 CycleYouth teams with these sub-names:
Tele-tubies, Barney n Friends and Terminators.  Terminators actually Dave's one.

GSC  Final
Unicoi State Park, 8/2/09  Helen Georgia

What a great season for our Devo team! Our Cycle youth DEVO 11-15 yr juniors team dominated the podium today at the banquet for the overall GSC series,  Taking home the GSC Championship Jersey and top spot was Carter Anderson. This is a Carter's third straight GSC Champion.  Joe Buck used a strong finish on this last race to jump from 3rd place in the standings to snare the overall second place for the series. Hayden Lanzilotta took home the 4th place overall award and Trace Nut captured the 5th place overall award.

Zachary Colins completed out a strong Cycleyouth presence by winning the 9-11 kids race series and today's race.  Zach will be proudly wearing his championship jersey this week and will be looking forward to defending his title next year.  Lots of swag was handed out to this smiling group of kids

SERC final
Fontana Village NC August 2nd

Carter Anderson and Zach Collins both took home the second place plaques for the SERC Series.  Racing in rain and lots of mud, Carter finished out his race in fourth place in one of the strongest fields this year for 11-14 year olds.  Carter got the pleasure of being the featured photo rider at the goneriding .com site this week.  Zach Collins took second place in the SERC Series for 9-11 kids. Mat Kogel, with no points at stake gave his try in the sport division and was just happy to finish with a bike absolutely covered in mud.

Serc Fontana Village, August 2nd

Sport 19-29

9-11 kids

Falling Waters, 7-18 Ellijay GA
In the 11-14 junior group, Carter Anderson takes his third top spot in a GSC race by a commanding 12 minutes.  Carter's ability to ride the 1000 feet of climbing over a 2.9 mile start and to navigate the steep downhills was the major difference today.  Trace Nutt took his top spot of the year by placing 3rd and Joe Buck finished fourth for the Devo team.  The boys will be competing in Unicoi in three weeks for the series championship finals.
Zach Collins places second today but guaranteed his first place finish for the overall GSC championships for the kids 9-11 age group.

Serc #9 Cheahea Mountain 7/11 Anniston AL
Zach Collins takes another first on a tough kids race that featured a major climb and than a very tricky rock course. Zach is only a few points behind his competition from repeating as the 9-11 kids SERC Champion. He will need another finish like today at Fontana Village in North Carolina to have any chance of his repeat.  Carter Anderson only made it about a mile into the course before he took a flat bike tire.  He tried to fix his flat as quickly as possible but a bad spare tire prevented him from making it back in the race.  Carter's 15 bonus points for today's event however insured him of finishing the SERC Series in second place.

CycleYouth Gives Back
To help encourage youth participation in racing CycleYouth is running a program to enable the race promoter to award prizes deeper into the junior fields. Our goal is to be able to prize 100% into the junior classes.  Currently we have been able to assist the Junior 11-14 and the Junior 15-18 classes in the GSC events.
Prize items need not be cycle related, but should be something useful for a junior cyclist in either a riding or even non-riding application (i.e. toys, games, bike parts).
Have unused prizes or bike parts?  Make a donation.  Donations can be collected through CycleYouth members or given directly to Terri Burger for use as Junior Swag.  100% of donations go back into the junior racers at these events.

Rock Hawk Effigy- 7-5 Eatonton GA
Zach Collins got some great recognition this weekend by being featured along with his Dad in the Local Macon TV news channel for their Mountain bike racing.  Zach put the final touches to his recognition by winning his GSC 9-11 kids race by a whooping margin.  Great Job Zach!  Carter Anderson pulled off another victory for the Devo team with an exciting finish.  Carter and the runner up had a mad dash to the finish line as they emerged out of the woods with Carter having the front position. Carter was just able to hold off the competition by about a half a bike at the finish.  Joe Buck, who was "under the weather" today toughed it out to claim the 5th place podium spot. Trace Nutt rounded out the day by finishing the day at the 6th spot and the honors of the best story about having to stop for a large snake that was in the middle of the trail.

SERC #8  6/28 Chattanooga TN

Carter Anderson garners his second SERC first place finish on the season with a win on top of Raccoon Mountain.  The 12.5 mile course has a lot of technical features, especially large rock boulders that need to be navigated over and around. Carter, who says he loves to ride this course due to it difficulty, was finally able to top for the first time the current leader in the SERC 11-14 series.  Hayden Lanziolta just finished outside the podium spot with a six place finish.

GSC #5 and SERC #7  6/21 Jackson GA

With a heat temperature close to 100 and high humidity the Cycleyouth Devo team finished with 4th, 5th and 6th spots.  Trace Nut was able to get his first podium spot of the year with a fifth place finish.  Trace was able to overcome the heat and pounding of all the roots that the Dauset Trails course throws out at you.  Carter Anderson took 4th and Hayden Lanzilota finished 6th.

SERC 6, GSC makeup  6-7 Clemson SC

Clemson race course is tough 9.5 mile course that has just about everything a mtb course should have: screaming downhills, tough hill climbs, lots of technical riding and a large group 11-14 year old boys racing.  With 10 boys racing, this challenging course saw another good battle between Carter and Joe. Both boys exchanged positions with each other a few times during the race, but it was Carter who overtook Joe on the final long climb to secure the third spot. Joe took forth and Hayden took seventh place in what was a very competitive group of GSC and SERC Racers.

Zach Collins took a solid second as he battles to win the kids 9-11 championships in both SERC and GSC series.

GSC #4 Heritage Park
6-14-09  Our CY boys rode over 16 miles on a very tough and rooty course. Carter was down from the leader by about 2 minutes after the first lap., but battle back to the top spot after the halfway point on the second lap.  Both he and the leader exchanged positions after this point, but Carter's last chance to take top prize fell short when a member of the leader's team from another class was unwilling to let Carter pass.  Carter took a close second and was followed by teammates Joe Buck (3rd) and Hayden Lanzilotta (4th).
In the time trial Saturday Joe Buck scorched the field of 5 boys in the 11-14 age group for the five mile time trial. He was over a minute faster than his closest competitor.  Carter took 3rd and Hayden closely in 4th.

Bump & Grind, US Pro tour Cup, AL
A super fast group of juniors showed up for the Bump including many racers from far away Texas and even Australia.  Matt Kogel took the top spot in the 15-18 year group in an exciting finish that gave him the win with only a 2 second margin of victory. Matt has now taken a first and a second in the Kenda Cup Series.  Carter Anderson finished 4th in this group behind Matt.
In the 13-14 group we saw some of the top riders duke it out over bragging rights.  Our own Joe Buck finished with a podium spot on the 3rd place stand.  Joe was followed by who may be our most improved rider of the season, Hayden Lanzilotta, who finished a close 4th.  We had a little battle between Devo-mates, but Joe was able to make a gap on Hayden when Hayden's chain came off.
  Congrats to all the racers!

Camp Thunder, Thomaston, GA
An off weekend from all the series' races.  Carter Anderson takes advantage of this race not being a usac event and races up to the Junior Sport Class.  This is a long course anyway, and making the jump today made it epic.  The pro men had fast laps of 55 minutes, and Carter was doing 2 laps.  Joined by his father and DEVO supporter, Dave Anderson, the two completed the two lap race in just over 3 hours.  A tired little mountain-biker will sleep good tonight!

US Cup #1 & SERC #5 5-3 Ducktown, TN
Devo's Hayden Lanzilotta took his first podium and highest finish for the year by capturing 3rd place in the jr 11-14 division.  Hayden finished the race soaking wet and muddy as the rains opened up on the 11:00 wave on what was already a soaked course.
Carter Anderson was flying down the notorious Thunder Rock Express trail when his brakes went completely out on a corner.  Luckily there was a full-sized bush for this half-sized CycleYouth where he ran off the course into the wet misty rain.  Still Carter survived the descent for 2nd place.
Our newest CycleYouth recruit, Matt Kogel, got a mud bath for his 2nd place finish in the Junior 15-18 class.  This was a close battle that left him only 45 seconds from the gold.
In the 9-11 race Zach Collins was back in his favorite position leading a 7 man field to take another win.

GSC 3 and SERC 4 4-26  Winder GA
It was a beautiful day at Fort Yargo with perfect weather and great trail conditions.  It even turned out to be better day for the Devo riders as our riders claimed four of the top six spots in a field of 13 junior riders.  Leading the way for the Devo Team was Carter Anderson.  Carter captured his first ever GSC/SERC and top spot on the Podium in 11-14 junior division.  Just behind him was Joe Buck, who took home second place.  If not for a slipped chain near the end of the race for Joe we may have seen another exciting finish like Columbus between these two Devo Riders. Trace Nutt had another strong finish and placed 5th place and he was shortly followed Haydan Lanzilotta.

  GSC 1 Macon Georgia4-3
One of our newest Team members, Zach Collins, started out the DEVO team on the right foot for the GSC season.  Zach took first top place finish by winning the 9 to 11 year old race by over a minute in a field of eight.
In the 11-14 category Joe Buck took our top spot of second place.  Joe said he just did not have enough in him when the leader of the day took off on a sprint on the hill climbs in the last mile of the race.  Carter Anderson followed behind Joe and captured 3rd place. Haydan Lanzilotta, another new member to the team took 5th place.

GSC 2 Columbus Georgia- 4-19
Wow, what a finish... is the best way to describe what was the best race of the day among all categories at this GSC Race.  With only about half a mile to go in the race the top 4 boys emerged from from the twisty single track section of the woods all together for an exciting finish through the open field area for all spectators to see.
The leader coming out of the woods was a non-devo rider and was followed by three of our devo riders, Carter Anderson, Joe Buck and Trace Nutt.  Carter made 2 to 3 attempts to pass the leader, but the leader would swerve over and cut him off every time.  Coming into the last 30 yards the boys took a slight right turn and Carter made his move to the leader's right.  Again, the leader swerved way over to cut him off, but this time it was to his own detriment and to Carter's as Joe Buck saw the short, straight and open line to the next turn. He shot past both of them to take the top spot.
Carter got past the previous leader and with only feet until the finish line got past the previous leader and beat him by half of a bikes distance.  Trace Nutt  was only seconds from the previous leader and followed right behind to claim the fourth place.  Hayden Lanzilotta finished 6th.

9 to 11 kids race.  Zach Collins took another podium spot with a 3rd place to finish.

Other races:

SERC 1  Hailes Trail in Gainesville Florida  - Carter Anderson takes second place.  Zach Collins finishes 3rd place.
SERC 3  Tsali NC-  Zach Collins takes 1st  place in kids race. Carter takes 4th place.

League
Formation of a Devo League here in Georgia is the result of years or working with junior racers and learning what the real needs are for their continued success. We are working towards 2010 for official launch.
CycleYouth Team has generously offered use of it's name and reputation to build the league program. CycleYouth has years of proven success including numerous National Titles and notable race results.  This success is meant to trickle down to all of our programs.
Local Bike Shops (LBS) over the years have supported junior and junior teams with little success, partly due to low number participation.  We formed the Devo League to put all the junior racers on one big team, one big happy group in a way.  The league is actually made up of many teams, many of which are shop-oriented teams.  Each team uses a similar jersey design, but with different sponsor logos.
