Georgia State Single Speed Championships

As the title states, you must ride a single speed.  Man, what a fun race.

My dad turned my light and fast K.H.S. Alite team bike into a single speed a week before the race and I got to get in a few good rides before race day.

I stepped into the 14 and U category with my older brother and it was pretty cool to have us both on the line.  I had a great race and so did Everett until he ran off the trail, then endoed right in front of me.  I took off and well....I would like to say I flew around the rest of the trail, but there were these prizes hidden in coffee cans on the side of the trail and.....I FOUND $10!!!!  (more money for the car savings account)

This race is promoted by my family and our friends so I worked most of the weekend and fed the racers water after my race.  It was a sunny day and a great course, but most of all I enjoyed the good atmosphere and hanging out with our friends.

I'm looking forward to the beginning of the GSC series and moving up to the sport category.

What is usually a wet rainy event saw perfect weather and trail conditions.
The KHS/Kenda team was originally an all junior team, but a last minute change had to be made to the line-up brining in Andy to replace Jesus who could not make it.
Andy happens to coach all these juniors, so making a team tactic was doubley easy.
  "We came to win."
They each raced one 40-something minute lap one at a time.  Tristan took the first lap which included a LeMans style run to the bike racks before pedaling up the 7 minute County Line Road.
Tristan had his hands full with another rider and finished his lap in a tie.  Handing off to the next rider it was up to Andy to establish a lead, which he did.  That gave Seth a comfortable 3 plus minute gap over 2nd, which Seth increased before handing off to Ethan.  Ethan rode solid increasing his lead over the competitions 4th lap man.
Soon the lead was enough to cover any mechanicals that might arise during the race, so the tactics changed to "be-careful-just-finish-the-lap-in-one-piece".

Coach Andy has a lot of experience in team relay races, he ran a tight ship race day and it paid off.  All 4 riders rode perfectly.
After 12 hours of racing the team completed 12 day laps and 4 night laps and scored the fastest night and day laps.

Deer Valley wrapped up today. I had a good start to the XC race coming
through lap 1 of 4 in 19th out of 60 or so starters. I blew up a bit on
the 2nd lap and had to recover. I had some cramps on the 3rd lap and
slowed down some more, then battled cramps on the last lap to finish
42nd. It took about 3 hours. The heat was a bit much for me.

Short track was great, I started between 15th and 20th and moved up to
finish 6th out of 30 something. Normalized power was 335w for 29 minutes
at 7,000 feet. I felt great.

Fort Mountain, GA GSA
by Jansen

Last weekend was the GSC Fort Mountain race.  We made it to the trail, on Friday, just in time for the sky to turn black and pour rain on us.  So…..we grilled out under a pavilion, instead!

Saturday morning we got up, prerode and soon found out the trail was about six miles long and was in a  simple long downhill, then long uphill route.  In sections, it was covered in loose rocks, which made it extremely hard to make it up the uphill portion.  But, it sure made me thankful when we got out of those rocks and could climb like crazy.

On Sunday the race started on a road climb before entering into the woods.  We were flying down the switchbacks, then I crashed on a not-so-sharp right-hand turn and was stopped by a fallen tree.  Ouch!  As I scrambled to get back onto my bike, the guy right behind me did the exact same thing!  Funny!  So, we didn’t really lose or gain much time on each other there.

I placed 2nd and I felt like this trail had the most mountain biking feel out of anything that I’ve ridden in awhile.  We had a great time.

Dauset Trails, SERC GA
by Jansen

The Dauset race was a combined, GSC/SERC race, so I knew there would be a good turn-out.  The course was in great condition and [Promoter]Dave runs it a new way each year.  It didn’t really have a lot of sustained climbing, but had plenty of rolling climbing on ‘huff-n-puff’.

We usually go up the trail Pine Mountain at the Duaset races, but Dave always switches things up, so we got to go down it and that was really fun!

I never crashed, but I had too much air in my tires, so I slid on the pine needles a couple times.  I have to say, my Kenda Smallblock Eights ROCK!  They have been the best all-around tire I’ve  raced on.  They are great in the mud and packed dirt and they roll so much faster than most mtb tires.

I really enjoyed the atmosphere at this race.  There is a great group of Cycle Youth teens to hang out with and I got to show off my not so new VW Van.  (it’s an ’89 hippie van!)  These guys even waited around to see my podium and I thought that was pretty cool.

Thanks guys.

Cyclocross Season in GA
Two rounds in the books for the 07 GA CX season.
Round one went poorly for A riders Mike and Andy who finished 10th and 17th.  Andy just off the Moab race was still very tired, but Mike has yet to give explanation.  Zach did well.
Round two went a little better with the pair in 5th and 6th.  It seems they will race into shape; expect a great performance from one of them before the season ends.
Jansen returns to the familiar 2nd place in the juniors, while other of our mtb'ers like Ethan struggle with the competition who does not consider cyclocross an off-season activities.

In other news, Andy gets taken out on the road.  Just after the B women finished he took one step into the isle and was smacked by a fast moving rider.  "It took off a little skin, I didn't know what was going on, but she hit the road and bled, I feel bad for her..., now my knee hurts."

Round 3, Monroe
This event used to be the race CycleYouth put on, but most of the work was done by Andy who passed the race on to another.  It is still a good venue, very bumpy, but great for spectators.
In the A race Andy had to take a pit half way into the 1st lap and lost the main pack and over a minute due to a low front tire.  He chased back strongly, but with the wind and the group working together ahead only picked of 10 spots to finish 9th.  Mike faired better finishing 6th, on a mountain bike, still not in race shape.
Ethan raced the CX4 class and finished in the pack.
Other racers were with other teams for cyclocross (CycleYouth is a mtb team):  Jansen had a rough day, Todd raced, Dont know how he did yet...
